CDI In IBD
Clostridioides difficile infection in Inflammatory Bowel Disease
CDI in combination with IBD increases the risk for multiple adverse outcomes compared with either condition alone1
CDI in patients with underlying IBD is associated with prolonged hospitalisation, need for surgery, escalation of IBD therapy, increased CDI recurrence and increased mortality1
4X Higher Mortality
Mortality rates are 4 times higher in patients with IBD and CDI than in patients with IBD alone1
Adverse outcomes of CDI complicating IBD:1,2*
- Subsequent IBD flares
- More likely to fail medical therapy
- More frequent need to escalate IBD therapy
- Higher surgery rates
- Higher mortality rate than for IBD alone
- More frequent CDI recurrences
- Increased risk of visits to Accident and Emergency
- Longer hospital stay
- Increased health care costs
*Comparison of CDI case outcomes of those with and without concurrent Inflammatory Bowel Disease
IBD can be considered as another CDI severity marker that indicates the need for more aggressive management1
